We were delighted to answer a recent request from our Macroom Tidy Town committee to install a bridge at one of the town’s National Heritage sites ‘Bealick Mill’
Steeped in rich history, the mill dates back to the eighteenth century. Corn and milling created prosperity in the area at the time as farmers had a ready market for their crops, while the mills provided employment. In 1899 the power of the mill wheel was harnessed to provide electricity to the town, and it is thought that Macroom was one of the first towns in the country with electric street lighting.
A true testament to the innovators of their time, the mill is a remarkable achievement that provided a renewable, sustainable, clean source of power.
